Burnout usually leaves me feeling uninspired and ready to escape the nearest tropical island ASAP. Feeling overwhelmed is almost unavoidable when you’re an entrepreneur or professional and a busy mom at the same time. However, even though you can’t control whether or not you experience burnout, you can control how you respond to a slump in energy.
When you’re down, it can be hard to see yourself out of the trenches. But feeling burnout doesn’t last forever, and you can find ways to still show up for yourself and your family when you’re feeling this way. So if you’re reading this because you’re experiencing burnout right now, here are three useful tips to help you overcome it:
Set aside alone time for yourself.
When work feels impossible to approach, and the rest of life’s responsibilities also seem daunting, this is a cue to take a moment to yourself. Get away from your kids, step away from work, and take a minute or however long you need to collect yourself. Sometimes when we’re feeling burntout, it’s because we haven’t set any intentions or priorities lately. So find your inspiration again, and set new boundaries or new goals for yourself that’ll make approaching work a bit easier or more exciting.
Avoid multitasking and instead choose mindfulness.
Trying to split your time and be with your kids and with your work at the same never works. While women are excellent at multitasking, it’s not always the best way to go about life. Slow things down, and aim to focus on one thing at a time, and strive to be more in the moment. You might find that you have more mental space to tackle all your tasks than you thought!
Let go of perfectionism.
You’re going to experience burnout if you set unrealistic expectations for yourself. There’s no such thing as the perfect working mom who has it 100% together, so you can’t hold yourself to that standard with your kids or in your professional life. Once you let go of your idea of perfection, you can focus on showing yourself grace and striving to do your best, and nothing more.
